Anyone who has a prior experience with computer networking will obviously know something about the network ping software. The pinging tool is perhaps one of the most useful utilities out there when it comes to diagnosing and solving problems related to the network. The network ping software is most commonly used to self-test the connectivity settings of a computer to the network. The ping software sends out ICMP echo response requests to the target computer, and the packets can vary in size from 8 bytes to 64 Kb. Once the packet reaches the destination computer, the ICMP packet is sent back via the same route to the host source computer. This whole phenomenon is more or less like an echo. The reply from the destination computer is known as the “ping”. The network ping software is a great tool to monitor if the current settings of the computer are working well with the network adapter or not.
The network ping software keeps on sending the ICMP echo requests incessantly until it is asked to stop.
The whole idea behind pinging is to get an echo reply. When the user finally stops the pinging, he/she can actually see the amount of packet loss in the pinging procedure. The round trip or the time taken for a packet to make the journey from the source computer and back also says a lot about the health of the network. If the packets somehow take an abnormally long time to come back, then there must be some problem with the network. The latency can be described as the time taken for a packet of data to make the round trip. Most of the operating systems with networking capabilities come with a bundled network package that has the ping software in it. Alternatively, you can also run the ping functionality by typing in commands.
The utility of the network ping software lies in the fact that it is a versatile piece of network monitoring and diagnostic program that helps the computer users get the maximum out of their machine. If you want your network to be up and running at all times, then you simply cannot do without the network ping software.
Nowadays, there are a number of new network pinging programs available in the market that allow the users to ping multiple IP addresses together so that the network administrator can monitor the overall health of his/her network. This software also provides the ability to save the ping results in the form of image files that can be pasted on word documents or log reports for archiving purposes.
